Are You Qualified For The Job?
Considering A Home Based Business?
By Trina L.C. Schiller
More and more, people are turning to the Internet to find a way to generate some extra income for themselves. The Internet is a great place to find information on home based business. You can't exactly go to the telephone book and look up 'home business' in the yellow pages. So, unless you already know someone who has become successful in a home based enterprise, the Internet is the place to go.
However, you should first ask yourself if you are qualified to partner with someone in business. What do I mean by qualified?
Another basic necessity is a telephone with long distance service. If you cannot make long distance phone calls, you can't very well participate in a business. All businesses, at some point, will require the placing of long distance calls.
You should have fax capabilities. If you do not have your own fax machine, you should have access to one.
Finally, and most importantly, you ABSOLUTELY MUST have a credit card, or checking account. If you don't have one or the other, forget about starting a business right now. You have to have a away to finance your business, and cash will not do.
Now let's discuss required skills.
There are basic skills that you must possess in order to operate a business, and a few extra ones, if you're doing business online. These may seem obvious, but you would not believe how many people lack these basic skills.
You must understand how to use an email account. Just having one doesn't mean you know how to use it. I don't know how many times that I have sent email communications to others, just to find out, by making a phone call, that the person I sent the message to, can't seem to find their way around their inbox, doesn't know how to white list an address, or set up filters.
You must know how to organize your time, keep a schedule, and make and keep appointments. This should not be too difficult, if you have ever worked a job where your schedule is posted, and changes, or you have had the need to make appointments with others for your own needs. eg: doctor, dentist, mechanic, etc..
You must be able to communicate clearly with others. If people can't understand you when you speak, you're not going to have a positive working relationship with them. Speak clearly and annunciate your words properly. Speak loud enough to be heard and do not mumble, especially when using the telephone.
If you don't possess these very important things, you may as well put the idea of owning your own business out of your head.
If you are in possession of these things and you are actively searching for an income opportunity, follow through with your request for information. That is to say, if you request information and leave your phone number, or email address for follow up, answer the phone, reply to the email. That is common courtesy. Someone has taken the time to respond to you, so make the time to respond to them. If someone leaves a message on your answering machine/ voice mail, call them back. If you commit to a meeting, or presentation, show up.
The people calling you and sending you email are doing so because you asked them to. Not responding to them is rude and a waste of their time. Time is money in business, even home based business, and when you blow someone off, you are costing them money.
If you are not serious in seeking an income opportunity, don't request information in the first place.
Something that you may or may not be aware of... When someone contacts you about becoming a business partner, YOU ARE BEING INTERVIEWED. The person who you are speaking with is deciding whether or not they want to work with you. They ask you questions about yourself, tell you about the position, and evaluate whether or not you would be an asset as a partner, just like any other job interview. If you agree to take the position, follow through on that too! Don't just go through the motions, hoping the person will forget about you. They won't, because they are serious about their business, even if you are not.
Do you go to job interviews with a less than serious attitude? Do you accept a job and then not ever show up for work?
Just because someone is offering you a position in a home based business enterprise, vs a salaried, or wage based position, does not mean the business is any less serious, or deserves any less commitment, and should not be taken lightly.
If you're serious, GREAT! If not, don't waste someone else's time by asking them to contact you.
