Let's Discuss Comment SPAM
By Trina L.C. Schiller

When you think of comment spam, what comes to mind? Do you think of an automated thing-a-ma-gig that searches out RSS feeds and posts ads to them? Well, there is more to comment spamming than that.

What is the comment function of a blog, or feed for? It is a place where readers can post their comments about what they've read, and ask questions about something. That's a pretty simple concept to wrap your brain around, right?

Pat yourself on the back, for understanding the concept, because evidence indicates that most people cannot grab onto that one.

The comments feature is to allow readers to leave feedback... NOT a place to post ads!

If you've got nothing to contribute, and you've read the important information, click through to someplace else. Don't be a sleeze-ball and post your advertisement in the comments box!

Don't write something like this either:
Hey, nice blog you've got here! Did you know that you could save 15% on your car insurance by switching to Geico? Here's my link: http://sleezeball.trackback.com

You are better off writing something like this instead:
Hey nice blog you've got here.
Joe Blow

The comments area is for revelvant discussion about the article. If the article is about how to best shampoo your carpet, then comments should be about shampooing a carpet, not about how you need better anti-virus protection. (And boy have I got a deal for you!)

If you've got something to add to the topic, say it! Add your link under your signature, like you would in a forum, But, if you're just looking for a cheap link back, take a hike! My readers deserve better than that. They read to get information. If you want to advertise with me, subscribe and visit The Cheap Seats and send me your ad through the proper channels.

I feel confident that I can speak for all ezine publishers who maintain blogs, when I say that feedback is wanted, cheap trackbacks are not. Ezine publishers sell advertising to make a living, they don't give it away.
